Our classroom routines (all year groups)

Each lesson starts with a retrieval practice activity (low-stake quiz/core knowledge test/dictation/various activities linked to previous learning)

Each new module will include 2 or more sessions of formal French phonics practice. There is a strong emphasis on phonics and pronunciation of words and sentences within our classroom practice all across the year.

Homework is set once a week for all classes. 3 a day vocabulary learning homework is set every other week in years 7, 8, 9 and every week in KS4. Staff will model the practice of effective learning and memorisation techniques in class several times in the year. We check homework at the start of the lesson with feedback. Each learning homework is formally tested with a core knowledge test.

In years 7, 8 and 9, we have developed a number of video lessons [click here) with Youtube, linked to Quizlet practice and a Google form quiz. Homework pages are also linked to the lessons. You will find all links and QR codes at the end of each booklet.
Key Stage 3
Learning a language is an extremely rewarding experience and, at key stage 3, the emphasis is on developing confidence in communicating in the target language through the study of a range of topics relating to everyday life.
Whilst expectations are high and students are stretched to ensure that they are equipped to take on the GCSE course in key stage 4, our primary objective is to ensure that students enjoy their learning and that they are willing and able to communicate effectively in French.
Students in years 7 and 8 are given lots of opportunities to speak and write in French and are encouraged to explore French culture through sharing food, music and film in French. Students in years 7, 8 and 9 also have the chance to visit Normandy as part of the activities week which take place in July.
Learning is supported in class and at home through our booklets where QR codes take students to supported video lessons on our YouTube channel, curated vocabulary lists on QUIZLET and google form quizzes to check learning. Foundation year
During this year, students will get a first taste of some of the topic areas they will cover in GCSE French. All students will have the opportunity to learn more about French culture and the French speaking world as part of the course as well as building upon the foundations of language they acquired at KS3.
Students work in mixed ability groups and cover the topics found on the GCSE specification. This foundation year gives students a flavour of the content of the new GCSE specification and provides an opportunity to consolidate their learning from KS3 in preparation for the rigors of the GCSE course.

Year 9 |

Key Stage 4
In KS4 students will follow the Edexcel GCSE full course. The emphasis is on independent manipulation of language to enable students to communicate confidently with native speakers and to cope in a variety of situations.
Students will sit either a higher (L4-9) or foundation (L1-5) tier exam paper and classes are streamed in the same way.
All students are prepared for assessments in reading, writing, listening and speaking and are given regular opportunities for assessment practise in lessons with their teachers.
Learning is supported through the use of booklets which are linked below. For use both in class and at home, our booklets contain all of the activities students will complete in a term. Booklets also contain QR codes which take students to curated vocabulary lists on QUIZLET and google form quizzes to check learning and support with exam question practise at home.

GCSE options and exam information
Students are assessed in examinations for listening, reading, writing and speaking in the second year of the course, usually during May or June. They will be assessed at foundation or higher level. Consistent vocabulary learning is essential to success and is supported via our weekly 3 or 5 a day programme. Students are expected to be able to manipulate grammatical structures independently.
Exam board: Edexcel
75+% of students at Aylsham High School take French at GCSE as part of their Core curriculum.
Students sit either the higher or the foundation paper. This is decided based upon performance at KS3 and in discussion with staff and students.
